Who are these Graiders anyway?

Graiders are undergraduate and graduate students who are aspiring teachers and are enrolled in or preparing to enroll in education programs, a.k.a., pre-service teachers.

Why are Graiders so important?

Graiders give teachers more time to make a bigger and more immediate impact on their students. Grading and providing feedback is an incredibly time-intensive but important task. Graiders provide rich, thorough and timely feedback on student work, speeding the learning cycle and the teacher’s ability to digest and understand student progress. By saving teachers up to 88% of their grading hours per assignment, teachers can invest more time in the highest-impact activities that only they can do, such as designing and delivering amazing lessons plans, meeting one-on-one with students, collaborating with colleagues and parents, and taking on leadership roles at the school. With the support of Graiders, teachers can assign more writing assignments, which is critical to improving writing skills, without drowning in grading. We also work with schools and districts to score K-12 interim assessments. These assessments are increasingly emphasizing extended writing, open-ended response, and critical thinking skills, which our Graiders are uniquely qualified to evaluate. Graiders interpret and apply complex, standards-based rubrics and evaluate a student's entire work process. This is a welcome departure from the typical practice of bubble sheets and scantrons. How does third-party feedback impact student learning?

The benefit of outside feedback to students is clear. Students gain experience writing and performing for objective third parties, which helps prepare them for state and national exams, AP exams, college essays, SAT/ACTs, and to perform at the collegiate level and beyond. Students (and their parents) appreciate feedback from someone who is not biased, positively or negatively, by their reputation in the classroom, augmenting feedback from their teacher who knows them well with a diverse perspective. Teachers appreciate the opportunity to be aligned with their students to interpret and learn from feedback, and they can use third-party feedback to ratify their own instructional points.

What kind of assignments are relevant for The Graide Network?

Graiders can assist with any type of assignment, but they most often help with assignments with a writing component, which are time-intensive to evaluate and require human-powered feedback and scoring.

What if my assignments aren’t digital?

Assignments that are already in digital form (e.g., Google Docs or Microsoft Word) are easiest to upload to our site, but teachers can also scan and upload hand-written assignments. Teachers who do this still realize significant time savings.

How does payment work?

For teachers, we offer packages of hours of grading support that can be used any time during the school year at the teacher’s discretion. School administrators can pay up front for their teachers’ memberships, or teachers can pay individually when posting their first assignment and utilize their school’s process for reimbursement. For interim assessments, pricing is on a per assessment basis, depending on the number and complexity of assessment(s) and school needs.

Do Graiders work for The Graide Network?

No, they do not. Graiders are independent teaching assistants. The Graide Network provides the platform for teachers and Graiders to connect. We thoroughly vet and train all Graiders before accepting them to the network to ensure they are qualified and reliable.

Is there any in-person interaction?

No, all work and communication is through our secure online platform.

How do I know that the Graiders are qualified?

The Graide Network is exclusive to top-performing undergraduate and graduate students who are enrolled in colleges and universities across the U.S. and are pursuing a career in teaching. They are vetted and approved by The Graide Network through a rigorous application and interview process (sub 20% acceptance rate). We evaluate relevant experience and coursework, academic performance, professionalism, and passion for the teaching profession. We look for demonstrated commitment to teaching, such as club involvement or membership in an education honors society. Candidates often already have significant tutoring and student teaching experience, and are mission-aligned with the teacher to deliver the best for the students.

Are Graiders trained?

Yes, Graiders are required to complete training on grading and feedback best practices, including norming processes and giving specific feedback that is tied to learning outcomes. Our academic advisory board of former teachers works with Graiders throughout the semester to provide ongoing coaching and support. For large-scale grading projects and interim assessments, Graiders are trained on each specific assessment for calibration and interrater reliability. Our Graiders are dependable, accurate, and are valued for helping to meet strict reporting deadlines and staying focused on producing accurate scores.

How does my Graider know how I would like the assignment to be graded?

You provide instructions to Graiders for each assignment. You also attach a rubric or answer key that anchors the Graider's feedback and grading. A high quality rubric is critical to ensuring high quality feedback. You can easily communicate with your Graider regarding any questions or clarifications through our online messaging system.

How will I know how my students are doing?

Graiders provide you with a detailed summary report for each assignment. This includes all grades, positive comments and areas for improvement for each student, as well as general feedback and insight on how the class did as a whole. This information can be quickly reviewed by the teacher to inform his or her instruction, flag outliers in performance, or form small groups for peer learning.

How does The Graide Network protect the privacy of my students’ information?

We appreciate the sensitivity of student data issues for schools, parents/guardians, and students. We require Graiders to sign a confidentiality agreement that they may not re-disclose information shared with them with any third party or use the information shared for any purpose other than the agreed-upon work with the teacher who provided the information. We require teachers to obtain the proper approvals from an authorized school administrator before working with a Graider. Lastly, we as a company collect as little data as possible about students and will not use that data to advertise or market to students or their parents.

How It Works

When should I post an assignment?

We encourage you to post the information about the assignment several days to a week before actually collecting student work. This helps to ensure that a Graider who fits your needs is available and ready to help you.

How am I matched with the right Graider?

We provide a list of recommended Graiders each time you post an assignment. Our recommendations are based on matching the grade level and subject matter with Graiders’ areas of study. Graiders with high ratings, strong track records of experience, and fast response rates are prioritized. We automatically request the Graiders that best fit your class, but you can also send requests to Graiders yourself. We work tirelessly to ensure your assignments are appropriately matched on time.

Do I work with the same Graider every time?

Not necessarily. Most teachers work with the same small group of Graiders. You can request a different Graider each time or continue to work with the one you like—it’s up to you.

Can I rate and review my Graider on their work?

After each assignment, you rate your Graider on three metrics: quality of feedback, accuracy of grades, professionalism and an overall rating. You can also provide brief qualitative feedback to help him or her improve. Graiders value your input because it directly impacts their development as teachers-in-training and it helps them be even more effective for your students. We monitor ratings to ensure that all of our Graiders are up to standard.

How can I communicate with my Graider?

We offer a secure, easy-to-use internal messaging system to keep the lines of communication open. In order to ensure quality work product and protect teachers, students, and Graiders, we do not allow teachers and Graiders to exchange personal contact information. There is no in-person interaction, and all communication occurs through the website.

What happens if I am not satisfied with a Graider’s work?

Our commitment is to provide the best possible support for teachers. We actively work with Graiders to ensure that their work product is of high quality. If you are not satisfied with your Graider’s work for any reason, you can choose to request a revision from that Graider or find a replacement Graider at no additional cost. This is our “Great Graider” guarantee and promise to you and your students.
